Here at Hammond Psychology & Associates, P.A., we understand that many people have anxiety about the idea of visiting a psychologist for the first time. It often helps to know what to expect at that first appointment to put your mind at ease.

First and foremost, know that just because you are seeking outside help doesn’t mean anything is wrong with you. The very fact that you’re seeking help rather than trying to deal with an issue on your own is a testament to how much your care about your own health and/or the mental and emotional health of your family, friends and others around you.

Before your first appointment, think about what you hope to accomplish by visiting us. Are you seeking a learning test? Are you simply looking for an unbiased third party to guide you in sorting out some things? Do you need help with an addiction? What is it that is bringing you to a counselor and what goals do you want to meet as a result of working with one? Getting really clear on what you want out of this will help you vocalize it to your potential therapist at your first appointment so that we can help you in the best way possible.

Also prior to your first appointment with us you will need to fill out some simple new patient paperwork which you can get here. On the day of your first appointment, try to arrive at least 15 minutes early and come in with an open mind. Remember that when you visit with us everything is confidential, this is a safe place and you are free to express yourself here.

A common question we get during the first appointment is how long does therapy last and how often are the therapy sessions?

In your first session, there will be a discussion regarding your treatment concerns, expectations and the course of therapy. The therapy process is a collaborative process between you and your therapist to work together towards your goals. The duration of therapy varies per client, with some clients utilizing brief therapy (8-12 sessions), while others may benefit from several months of sessions. Typically, clients are seen once a week at the beginning of treatment.
