During the summer time many students are enjoying the break from school. The freedom of not having daily assignments and weekly quizzes can be so exciting. However, for older kids that have just graduated from high school the summer time is like a ticking clock to the biggest change of their lives to date- the change of going from grade school to college. For some kids this change is no big deal, but for others it is a serious jolt that they must be mentally prepared for. Here are some tips to help your soon-to-be college freshman mentally prepare for college:
– Knowing what to expect helps soften the blow of change. One of the biggest problems for most people is the fear of the unknown. Knowing what is coming often makes the transition easier. Have your teen research the school they are going to, encourage them to attend orientation and if possible to look up the teachers they may have.
– Add some tools to their mental tool belt. If they haven’t learned tasks like balancing a checkbook, cooking, cleaning (how to do laundry!) and other similar things use this summer to teach them. This is especially helpful if they are going away to college, but even if they will be staying home it’s time they learn all these skills if they don’t yet know them. Another tool to add to their mental belt is time management!
– Encourage them to find a mentor/counselor. Sometimes just having a friendly guide helps people to transition into something new. Plus, if they know what they want to major in seeking out a mentor who is already in the field could put them on a faster track towards success.
– Ask them how they are feeling and listen to their thoughts. You can’t help ease their woes if you don’t know what those woes are. Just knowing that you are there to talk can make a world of difference. Make sure they know that even if they are miles away they can always call you to chat and seek advice. A good support system at home can put any troubled mind at ease.
