Anxiety is a nervous disorder characterized by a state of excessive uneasiness and apprehension, typically with compulsive behavior or panic attacks. For many people feelings of anxiety are fleeting, but for others anxiety is a constant state that can get so bad that it nearly feels unbearable.

It may be hard to understand, but some children do in fact suffer from anxiety. There are a number of things that can cause anxiety in a child including the loss of a pet or loved one, issues with bullying, the struggle of parents that are divorcing, fear of real and inanimate things and more.

To find out if your child is in fact suffering from anxiety or if it’s some other factor at hand you could schedule an appointment with your mental health professional to evaluate your child. If it is an anxiety disorder, they can then recommend the best treatments. For most children they will need professional guidance in managing their anxiety. Sme children successfully manage and even overcome their anxiety simply through talk therapy whereas others need medication.

Of course, a common question is whether a child’s anxiety will just naturally dissipate or if therapy is actually necessary. The truth is that it depends on the child, the severity of their anxiety and the type of anxiety that is plaguing them. It is better to have a professional evaluate them and help you come to the best decision for the child than it is to chalk it up to “growing pains” or “just a phase”. The longer the child is left to deal with the anxiety on their own the stronger the feelings of anxiousness can sometimes become and the more difficult therapy will subsequently be.
