Welcome to another sneak peek of Doctor Hammond’s soon to be titled book on raising emotionally healthy children. Today, we’re assigning you homework. Rather, we’re explaining why you need to get involved with your children’s education and the homework they bring home.
Homework is a necessary evil our children will have to do. Regardless of the school you send them to, eventually they will reach an age where they have to start doing homework. In fact, some schools begin assigning homework as early as kindergarten. Whether we like it or not, when our children are assigned homework, we are too. Let’s take a quick look at why we must get involved.
Your kids will get better grades
Children with parents who help them do their homework attain higher grades and higher test scores. The more parents get involved, the more children are able to grasp what they are taught in the classroom leading to better performance. This happens because there are certain aspects that the children might not have understood in the classroom, but with the explanation of the parent they are able to understand in a better way.
Improves behavior
Children tend to develop better social skills and demonstrate improved behavior when their parents are involved fully in their education. Children are less likely to be disruptive in the class, more likely to attend school daily and have higher chances of finishing their homework when their parents are involved in the process. Children also seem to enjoy school more when their parents are concerned or get involved in helping them complete their homework.
Improves education levels
Involvement of parents in assisting children complete their homework helps a lot in overall improvement of education standards. They motivate the teachers to teach the children more, thus helping them provide high quality education. The parents gain great respect of teachers, thus making them have higher expectation of their children which helps them offer higher quality education to them.
Boosts confidence
When children feel supported at school and home, they gain a more positive attitude about education, feel more confident in the work they do and prioritize their academic achievement. The children feel accepted, included and respected both at home and school.
Shows them you care
Helping your children with their homework is a great way to show you love and care about them. This doesn’t mean doing their homework of course, but helping them will improve their bond with you because you took an active interest in their well being.
Holds them accountable
When children understand that you are paying attention to their homework, they become more accountable. This will ensure that they finish their work in the most efficient way. Keep track of assignments given and set a time and place for them to do their work and you will instill a routine of getting things done into them for life making them several times less likely to procrastinate on tasks in the future.
