Children love to learn. It’s the reason they keep asking “why, why, why.” When you continue answering their questions of “why,” you’re encouraging them to learn.

1. Help children enjoy learning by letting them find out answers on their own.

For example, if your children ask you, “Why do birds fly?” Resist the urge to answer. Instead of saying it’s because they have feathers, or going into detail about the mechanisms that help birds fly, turn the question back to them. You can ask them, “What do you think?” and let their imaginations soar.

You’ll enjoy listening to all the funny answers, and your children will enjoy providing all their thoughts. Once your children have exhausted all possibilities, you can direct them to books, YouTube videos, and more to give them the actual answers.

2. Use picture books.

Then, move into word books that have lots of pictures as you teach your children to read. The love of books really is learned.

3. Bring them outdoors.

When you are free, and the weather permits, bring your children to watch the birds in nature. You can ask them the same question why do birds fly? See how much they can remember.

If they can’t remember or give the wrong answer, help them along without scolding or mockery. Once learning becomes unpleasant, many children lose their desire to learn.

4. Incorporate learning in daily activity.

Bring your children to the supermarket. Give them the shopping list. Teach them to read the label and the prices. Teach them to look at the ingredients, and how amazing it is that simple ingredients like flour and water can make a wide variety of foods.

5. Make learning fun!

Children can learn through play. Let them pretend that they are birds. Let them imagine flying in the sky, and the wind blows against them.
